Another case of stoning

A woman is sentenced to stoning in Pakistan


Zafaran Bibi is a young woman who had gone to the police station in southwest Pakistan to report she was raped by her brother-in-law and became pregnant as a result. According to media reports, however, the police investigated the matter and reported that she had confessed to having a relationship with this man. On 20 April, Zafaran was sentenced to death by stoning. Her life is in danger.


In this century, stoning women to death for having sexual relations based on Islamic laws is a horrible violation of human rights that must be stopped immediately. The government of Pakistan is responsible for this human catastrophe. The International Committee against Stoning will not tolerate this brutality in any part of the world and will strongly oppose stoning.


From 21 April, the International Committee against Stoning has initiated an international campaign to save Zafaran's life. We will exert all our efforts and international pressure to save the lives of two women, Ameneh Laval in Nigeria and Zafaran Bibi in Pakistan. We are calling on the media to reflect the news about the international protests against stoning. We call on all human rights and womenâs right organisations to protest these inhuman sentences. Please send you protest letters to the government of Pakistan at the below address. Also, send a copy of you protest letter to the International Committee against Stoning. A sample protest letter is attached.

We have been informed that on 20 April, the Pakistani government has sentenced Zafaran Bibi to death by stoning. She was raped by her brother in law and became pregnant as a result. Your government did not support her but even sentenced her to stoning. This cannot be tolerated. 

We express our strongest protest against this medieval treatment of women and demand that your government cease stoning. Stoning a woman to death for being raped or for her private affairs is a shame for humanity and has to be stopped immediately.
