Royal News! July 12, 2001 - Former king Simeon II has agreed to become Bulgaria's new prime minister. "After considering my sense of responsibility and the vote of confidence I received on June 17, I accept this offer," he said, adding that his only concern is the well-being of the people. The ex-king's party, the National Movement for Simeon II or NDS, won the country's parliamentary elections on June 17. The Bulgarian monarchy was abolished in 1946, when the king was nine. The royal family went into exile and Simeon did not visit Bulgaria again until 1996. He has never abdicated. ***** July 31, 2001 - Italy's minister for parliamentary relations said today that the government wants to eliminate the constitutional clause which prevents male members of the royal House of Savoy from entering the country.
