Splendor and Grandeur of the Great Kings – The Persian Empire
Historical Museum of the Palatinate

Speyer, Germany
July 9 – October 29, 2006

On July 8, 2006, the Historical Museum of Palatinate in Speyer, Germany, will open its highly anticipated Splendor and Grandeur of the Great Kings - The Persian Empire exhibition to its visitors.

During the exhibition, in addition to archaeological findings and several artifacts that will be shown in Germany for the first time, the visitors will see the virtual reconstruction of Persepolis in an innovative format as they stand in the center of four screens created by persepolis3D.com. The museum will also display a column capital model of Apadana in 1:1 scale based on the reproduction plans of persepolis3D.com. With the collaboration of Mr. Shahrokh Razmjou, Head of Achaemenid Studies in Tehran, the persepolis3D team, the talented artist Mr. Beat Kuenzler, and the Historical Museum of Palatinate, this model was reconstructed to present for the first time the possible color schemes for the column capitals of Persepolis.

With this work, the Historical Museum of Palatinate hopes to raise interest and support from the archaeological institutions in pursuing the research of the color schemes topic at Persepolis.

The exhibition will present the wealth, prosperity, and culture of an empire that with its magnificence brought people together from various origins and cultures from the time of Cyrus the Great until Darius III.

Last Day of Hunger Strike in London and Call from Reza Pahlavi

July 16, 2006

Potkin Azarmehr

It was the last day of the hunger strike in London, which took place in solidarity with Iran's prisoners of conscience. Those who took part in the hunger strike had two common denominators. They were Iranians and they wanted to see the prisoners of conscience in Iran set free.

Whether they were republicans, monarchists, Left or Right, they respected each other for the hardship they put themselves through to publicise Iran's political prisoners of conscience.

Today there was also a pleasant surprise call from Reza Pahlavi. He spoke to most of the participants on hunger strike. Monarchists or Republicans, it didn't matter, they were more than happy to converse with Reza Pahlavi on the phone.

What they all admired was that Reza Pahlavi backed any unified action in support of all of Iran's political prisoners, irrespective of who had called for it. Unlike some others who made five minute appearances and were quickly interviewed by the BBC Persian Service outside the Bush House and then quickly left, Reza Pahlavi wasn't after scoring political points for himself. What mattered to Reza Pahlavi most, was that we were standing side by side for a common goal, helping to create an Iran where no one will be harmed for their views.

The documentary reconstructs the imposing site of Persepolis. The architects

Kourosh Afhami and Wolfgang Gambke use computer technology for its virtual reconstruction

based primarily on Friedrich Krefter's work Persepolis-Rekonstruktionen and the documentation

obtained from the excavations led by E.F.Schmidt along with their own recent onsite research results.

Working on this project for several years, they produced several thousand outlines and details.

Not only does the documentary breathe life into the splendor of Persepolis, it also recreates a picture

of a world empire, which was exemplary in its organization and administration. What was perhaps

its most important feature, a realm whose inhabitants, even in the conquered regions, could rely

on tolerance in questions of religion and culture and on the rule of law.
