Happy 80th birthday, Ms. Monroe. Chronicle Illustration Marilyn Monroe with Clark Gable in "The Misfits" (1961), ... Marilyn Monroe Marilyn Monroe portrays a cafe singer in a rodeo town in ... More...

Marilyn Monroe is as dead as James Dean in that practically the first thing we learn about her is that she's dead. The second thing we know is that she was beautiful. It's difficult to mourn someone who's been dead for 44 years, and yet to contemplate the anniversary of Monroe's birth -- 80 years ago today on June 1, 1926 -- is to come suddenly and unexpectedly close. All at once what seemed like inevitability gives way to possibility.

Think of who she was, how she was regarded, and the people she knew. Think of where she stood in the world, of her communicative gifts, of how much people liked her. She was in the twilight of her girlhood and in the early morning of her womanhood. Her life was before her. She could have done anything, but didn't. She didn't know what she'd be missing -- and now we don't know what we missed.

But we can guess, so that's what we did. Several of us have devised Marilyn scenarios, filling out a vision of the past 44 years that might have been. Some of these scenarios are satiric, some are a little sad. Mine started out trying to be funny, but then I got depressed in the middle of it.

That should come as no surprise. Funny, but then sad: What could be more right for Marilyn Monroe?

Good Time with Iranian Cinema

By Syma Sayyah, Tehran

I have been lucky with films these days. My cousin Fahimeh lent me some Iranian DVD films that I had missed on screen. I love watching movies, and I find this is the best way for me to relax and see movies. I can do it whenever it is convenient and if I don't like it I just fast forward, unless it is really bad.

Last week, I watched three films in a row. The first was I'm Taraneh 15. It was so good. The film was work of Mr Rasoul Sader-Amlie and Taraneh Alidoust played her part most beautifully. It was engaging, interesting as it showed so many issues that prevails in our towns and in our lives here in Iran.

The next film that I enjoyed watching was Friday's Soldiers, the work of prominent Iranian film director Masoud Kimiaie. The film tells the story of three guys, who meet while serving their military service, and their sergeant, when they come to Tehran on leave on a Friday. The film shows the relationship that develops between the three and the brother of one of them. It shows the pain that each one carries in his life whether rich or poor, traditional or westernized. I was most impressed with some of acting done by the ladies in the film, Andishe Fouladvand and Marbela Zareie.

The third film was The Fifth Reaction by Tahmineh Millani about a group of women friend who are teachers and how they help each other to combat the harshness and injustice that men bring into their lives. This I had seen many years ago when it was screened privately.

Last week I was invited to private viewing of a film called Gone with the Wind by Mr Sadre Abdoulahi. This film was not allowed to be screened for four years and after a lot of negotiation and cuts it recently got permission from the authorities for public viewing.

Golshifteh Farahani

The director wanted to get a feminists point of view. When I talked to him before the screening, he told me that this is the first political film which is serious. Well, apart from a few clich?lines I could not at any time look at this and find it serious let alone political. Mr Abdoulahi told me he made this film so that in fifty years time, when people review Iranian cinema of today, they will find this film as a source of telling it. The film is about a young newly-wed couple who goes to Kish and wants to help develop it. In the process, even though he succeeds, at the end he loses his wife and leads a very unhappy lonely life. She goes to North America, studies and comes back eventually to beat her former husband's firm at a tender. Is this feminism? No way! Women have not suffered, tried, studied and aspired just to end up playing silly games of win and lose. In playing such games everybody will eventually lose. The film has a few very good sequences but I found it below average even though it had two leading artists. I hope you sometime get to draw your own conclusions.

Ali Rafie

Earlier this year, I was also lucky to be invited by Mr and Mrs Toscano at their house to see the lovely film Fish Fall in Love by Ali Rafie which recently won the best film at the 7th Aubange International Film festival. This was wonderful to see. Mr Rafie who has extensive experience of the theater has made each shot a beautiful picture to look at. The script, which he wrote, has portrayed the women in this film most interestingly and their relationships with themselves, their world and each other truly profound. We met the leading actress in the film, Golshifteh Farahani, who was at the private screening along with Mr Rafie and her husband. This is a great film and I recommend that, if it comes your way, please go and see it and let me know what you think.

I met him last month at the Salon du Livre in Paris and we chatted on films for a while. He is also the head of the French film school La Femis. In anycase it was quite impressive to speak and shake the hands of one of the most respected film critics and film historians since Francois Truffaut. He worked with Louis Bunuel and of course all the great french filmmakers and Film Stars such as Alain Delon, Catherine Deneuve and Jean Paul Belmondo. He spoke fondly of Iranian Culture and Cinema.

He sure made my day on that Day. I hope I can meet him more thoroughly one day cause he is a fascinating personality.

THE WORST FILM AT CANNES COMPETITION 2006

http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/marieantoinette/index.html

I think this is going to be the most embarrassing film of the Croisette this year. Made by Sofia Copolla and shot on location it looks so bad. From the costumes to the actors. Non look like the original ones. This is the most vulgar depiction and Hollywood at its worst. And Boy It takes alot for me to bad mouth Hollywood for I truly don't think this is a Hollywood movie. The best Hollywood films on European History were made by Europeans and particularly the British. Just listen to the music Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ;0(

Sofia Copolla just looks as if she has been given a Million $ Toy and thinks she is playing with a Barbie Doll and decided to cast Ken as King Louis XVI ????

I will give you the credit if you tell me I haven't seen this the film yet and its too early to judge. But what I see here is Sofia who thinks she is Kubrick directing Barry Lyndon. But gosh !!! This is the Shitiest trailer I have seen of any Historical film to date. Even the lighting looks bad. They could have at least hired Darius Khondji who did an excellent job on Evita !! If you want to see a Romantic and relatively accurate depiction of France's last Queen go see this DVD with French Star Michelle Morgan :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048355/

Or the Excellent Nuit de Varennes by Ettore Scola :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084423/

Anyway I think that the best people who have made films on Kings and Queens or Revolutionaries were those directors who at worst hated their guts so at least knew how to portray their subjects because they could understand or relate to them. Look at Eisenstein with Ivan the Terrible or Bardanchoucks Napoleon in Waterloo with the excellent and yet American Rod Steiger. Miss Sophia Coppola doesn't know what is a Tyrant so she shouldn't even bother to depict one on screen. Imagine making a movie on Khomeiny or the Shah and Mossadeg and tuning the whole thing with "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" ... Sofia is anything but Stanley Kubrick to allow herself to use anachronisms like Kubrick did with using Strauss' classical music with images of Outer Space.

THIS Marie Antoinette looks like a Reality Show !!!

The French sure beheaded an innocent yet spoiled Queen (Who was Austrian to begin with) but Boy What wouldn't I give to chop off Sophia Coppola's head after seeing this trailer !!!. Is anyone sure she is the REAL daughter of the guy who made this obscure film called the GODFATHER I, II, III or APOCOLYPSE NOW ? Surely she doesn't have your genes Francis ?

God Forbid if they give her a Palm D'Or. ;0((((

This is a nightmare.

And Vive Le Roi !!!

D

PS: I will give you my reall opinion when I see the movie ;0)))

Brando's final film back on track

Marlon Brando

Brando last appeared on screen in The Score in 2001
Marlon Brando's final film has resumed shooting after it was halted following his death in July 2004. Ridha Behi's Brando and Brando told the tale of a Tunisian boy who travelled to the US to pursue the American dream and meet his hero Brando. The legendary actor spent his final six months working on the project. The film is now called Citizen Brando and will be part fiction and part documentary, based on Behi's experience of becoming friends with the star.

As well as starring in the film, Brando had been involved with the development of the project, including working on script revisions with Behi, the director. "What I was highlighting in the film, the Arab-USA tensions, have even greater resonance, two years later," said Behi. The fictional side of the film will star Christopher Walken. Shooting has already begun at the Cannes Film Festival and will continue in the UK, Tunisia and the US over the next few weeks. Behi, whose other films include Les Anges and Soleil des Heynes, is planning to submit Citizen Brando for next year's Cannes festival.

Former Doors Drummer John Densmore And Iran’s Reza Offer Cross-Cultural Sounds
Published May 23, 2006

http://www.henhousestudios.com/artists/mkpgartist.php?artistID=1120

Haunting and spiritual, driving and hypnotic, “Peaceful Sounds from the Axis of Evil” is the first chance for North American audiences to experience the collaboration between former Doors’ drummer John Densmore and master Persian musician Reza Derakshani.
“This as a beautiful hybrid between two countries that are turning more and more bellicose,” is how Densmore describes the music he makes with the Iranian-born Reza. “We’re not politicians, but I wanted Americans to see the face and hear the sounds of the Iranian people.”
It’s a collaboration born of respect and mutual appreciation of the power of music. Densmore first met Reza a few years ago at a conference hosted by poet Robert Bly. Immediately struck by the shy Iranian musician’s charisma and talent, Densmore later sought out Reza at the latter’s New York apartment. Playing together, Densmore knew he was in the presence of a something special, that Reza was “a singer of unique and transcendent power.” Given that Densmore first gained fame drumming behind Jim Morrison in the Doors, that’s quite a compliment. Their impromptu jam eventually led to “Ray of the Wine” (Stonemountain Entertainment), an album of Reza’s songs produced and arranged by Densmore. The sounds they create bridge the differences between their countries. “Music is non-verbal. It’s direct and right to the heart and we can commiserate through our thoughts and emotions.” Besides, he notes with a grin, it’s a collaboration that will make both country’s leaders uncomfortable. “The Iranian leadership just banned Western music, and here we are making music that combines classic Persian sounds with jazz, rock and folk.”
The two friends will be accompanied in concert by members of Densmore’s band, Tribaljazz. In addition to music from the album, Reza will recite poems by his favorite poet, Rumi, while Densmore will read selections from various Iranian blogs. Looking forward to the tour, which includes dates in Washington D.C., Toronto and Montreal, Densmore says the shows will begin on “a meditative note but by the end, we hope to get everyone on their feet and dancing.” Future dates are being planned.

June 16 Toronto, CAN Lula Lounge
June 17 Montreal, CAN Theatre Le National

Darius Khondji films Zidane (Cannes Film Festival Selection)

Zidane by director Douglas Gordon and photographed film by French Iranian Darius KHondji. This is a portrait on film, in action and in real time, of one of the greatest players in the history of soccer, Zinédine Zidane.

The film is a unique endeavor midway between the work of a portrait artist and a high action movie for a broad viewing public.

Seventeen synchronized cameras were used, mixing super 35mm and High Definition, each focusing solely on Zinédine Zidane from the first kick of the ball to the final whistle.

This 360 degree perspective along with a sound universe that recreates the environment of the crowd allows us to enter into a multidimensional space leading the spectator to experience the sensations, the psychology and the body of a moving athlete.

French Filmmakers Go From Penguins to Politics

The makers of last year's hit documentary March of the Penguins have produced a new documentary about French President Jacques Chirac, Dans la Peau de Jacques Chirac (Being Jacques Chirac) that is being compared with Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. The movie, which opened in France on Wednesday, is presented as a "confession" by Chirac and features the voice of an impersonator whom the French wire service Agence France-Presse described as "highly convincing." While the film skewers Chirac, it does so sympathetically, several critics agree, and TV satirist Karl Zero, who wrote the script with Michel Royer, told AFP that he would like to show it to Chirac. "Underneath it all, he is very human; it's really quite touching at times," he said.

Bellucci to Play Sonia Gandhi in Biopic
Tuesday May 30 4:42 PM ET

Monica Bellucci will star in a film about Italian-born Sonia Gandhi, who married into India's most powerful political dynasty and now heads the country's ruling party, the Times of India reported Tuesday. The Italian actress agreed to take on the role after reading the script, producer Sunanda Murli Manohar was quoted as saying. "Her confirmation finally puts a seal on the deal," Manohar said. "She is excited about the prospect of playing Sonia Gandhi."

Jagmohan Mundhra, a well-known Indian filmmaker, will direct the movie. Shooting is expected to begin in September. Neither the filmmakers nor Bellucci were immediately available for comment. Bellucci, 37, starred in 2004's "The Passion of the Christ." Gandhi's husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was assassinated in a 1991 suicide bombing. His mother, Indira Gandhi the country's longest-serving prime minister also was assassinated, and his grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru was India's first prime minister. Sonia Gandhi refused the prime minister's job when her Congress party and its allies won elections in May 2004 because of opposition from Hindu nationalists, who argued that a person of non-Indian heritage should not lead the country. Mundhra's "Provoked," starring Aishwarya Rai, was screened at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The filmmaker told the Times of India that he had also considered Rai and Preity Zinta, another Bollywood leading lady, for the Gandhi project.
